The role

Cooley is seeking a Trainee Patent Attorney with a Chemistry background to join its IP practice in London. This role is for an early-career professional interested in applying scientific knowledge within a legal and commercial setting, focusing on protecting innovations for innovative companies.

What you'll do

Use your scientific background in a legal and commercial environment
Work with innovative companies and technologies across diverse sectors, particularly in the pharmaceuticals space
Advise innovative companies, universities and investors across the life sciences sector
Work closely with colleagues across Cooley to see intellectual property in its wider commercial context, including investment, licensing, transactions and disputes
Engage closely with science, analysing new technologies, identifying what makes an invention important
Develop strategies for protecting inventions
Communicate complex scientific and legal issues clearly and persuasively

What we're looking for

Undergraduate degree in Chemistry is required

Ability to understand and analyse complex scientific concepts and technical information

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

Close attention to detail

Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with clients and colleagues

Ability to organise and prioritise work, manage a varied workload, adapt to changing priorities and meet deadlines

Intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm for learning and developing new skills

Interest in applying scientific knowledge in a legal and commercial environment

A postgraduate qualification in organic chemistry or a related field is preferred· nice to have

An academic focus on, or research experience in, small molecule organic chemistry would be advantageous· nice to have
