The role
Jones Day is seeking an IP Patent Prosecution Associate with 1+ years of experience to join their Pittsburgh/San Diego office. This role focuses on electrical engineering and computer science patent prosecution and strategic portfolio management for technology clients.
What you'll do
- Draft and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications in technology and related disciplines
- Conduct freedom-to-operate, validity, and patentability analyses
- Assist in IP due diligence, portfolio management, and strategic counseling for emerging and established technology clients
- Collaborate with attorneys to provide technical expertise in support of litigation, licensing, and other IP-related matters
- Maintain current knowledge of U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and international patent practices, procedures, and developments relevant to high tech areas
What we're looking for
Degree in electrical engineering, computer science, software engineering or a related discipline
Registered to practice before the USPTO with a valid registration number and in good standing
Admitted to local state bar and in good standing
Strong background in engineering and/or computer science, with demonstrated expertise in areas such as AI/ML, processor architecture, telecommunications, cybersecurity, semiconductors, or related technologies
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technological concepts into clear legal documents
Minimum of one (1) year of prior law firm or in-house patent prosecution experience in technology
Team-oriented, detail-focused, and committed to providing high-quality client service
Superior academic background
Desire for significant responsibility and client interaction
Advanced degree preferred· nice to have
