The role

This role is for an experienced Privacy Lawyer with 8+ years of PQE, joining the Technology practice at Ashurst Perkins Coie in Sydney. The position is a temporary engagement, likely for a minimum of 3 months and potentially up to 12 months, focusing on privacy law and regulatory compliance within a highly regulated environment.

What we're looking for

Minimum of 8 years' experience

Current Australian practising certificate

Right to live and work in Australia

Have or be prepared to get security clearance

Experience in telecommunications· nice to have

Experience working in a highly regulated environment· nice to have

Demonstrated experience advising on privacy law and regulatory compliance within the telecommunications, technology, financial services or other highly regulated sectors· nice to have

Strong knowledge of the Privacy Act, Australian Privacy Principles and emerging privacy regulatory developments· nice to have

Experience providing legal advice on telecommunications-specific privacy obligations, including protected information requirements under Part 13 of the Telecommunications Act· nice to have

Experience advising on obligations arising under the Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Act, including interception, data retention and law enforcement access requirements· nice to have

Proven ability to support organisations through regulatory reform and compliance uplift programs, including implementation of new legislative and regulatory requirements· nice to have

Strong capability in identifying, assessing and managing legal, regulatory and reputational risks associated with privacy and telecommunications regulation· nice to have

Experience advising on governance, compliance and regulatory matters within a large corporate or in-house legal environment· nice to have

Experience supporting regulatory projects involving privacy reform, cyber security, data governance, consumer protection or telecommunications compliance· nice to have

Familiarity with scam prevention frameworks, customer protection obligations and broader telecommunications regulatory requirements· nice to have

Experience advising on sensitive customer matters, including hardship, vulnerability, domestic violence or customer protection issues· nice to have

Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to engage effectively with legal, risk, privacy, compliance, regulatory and operational teams· nice to have

Ability to operate as a subject matter expert and primary point of contact for privacy-related legal issues· nice to have

Strong technical expertise with the confidence to act as the lead privacy specialist within the team· nice to have

Highly analytical with the ability to interpret complex legislative and regulatory frameworks· nice to have

Capable of working autonomously and exercising sound judgement on complex legal and regulatory matters· nice to have

Resilient and adaptable with the ability to perform effectively in an evolving and uncertain regulatory environment· nice to have

Excellent stakeholder management skills with the ability to build credibility and trusted relationships across the organisation· nice to have

Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex regulatory concepts in a clear and practical manner· nice to have

Effective prioritisation and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple competing matters· nice to have

Calm under pressure and capable of providing clear guidance in complex or sensitive situations· nice to have
