Lawyer - Public Law - Governance, Procurement and Probity at Maddocks

The role

This role is for confident and enthusiastic lawyers in the early stages of their legal careers to join the Public Law - Governance, Procurement and Probity team in Canberra. You will provide pragmatic, solutions-focused advice to government departments and agencies on major procurements, grants, and complex matters.

What you'll do

Provide pragmatic, solutions-focused advice across a variety of major procurements and grants projects
Advise on complex and often sensitive matters with real-world impact

What we're looking for

Admission to legal practice and ability to obtain a government security clearance

Genuine interest in current affairs and the public sector

Passion for helping clients make lawful and ethical decisions regarding commitments of public money

Good track record of working collaboratively and contributing to a team environment

Sense of curiosity and openness to learning new skills

Ability to see the ‘big picture’

Clear and confident communicator with strong attention to detail

Sound technical drafting and statutory interpretation skills

Ability to obtain quickly, a strong understanding of probity and integrity in the public sector

Understanding of governance principles applicable to procurement, grants and other spending processes

General public sector and/or legal experience

Experience in one or more of procurement and grants, commercial law, statutory interpretation and/or administrative law decision-making, audit, risk and investigations

Strong emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills

Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment working on a variety of complex and interesting projects

Legally permitted to work in Australia
