The role
Baker McKenzie is seeking a Mid-Level Customs Associate for their Washington D.C. office. This role focuses on US trade law, particularly customs and import matters, within the Regulatory and Transportation practice areas, requiring 3-5 years of PQE.
What you'll do
- Advise on regulatory matters
- Conduct advisory work relating to customs classification, valuation, and country of origin and marking
- Handle enforcement investigations
- Perform compliance program reviews
- Complete cross-border transactional compliance reviews
- Manage multiple workstreams
- Support client relationships
- Collaborate with cross-practice teams across multiple jurisdictions
What we're looking for
3-5 years of experience in US trade law
Demonstrated focus on US customs and import matters
Experience advising on regulatory matters including customs classification, valuation, and country of origin and marking
Experience with enforcement investigations and compliance program reviews
Experience with cross-border transactional compliance reviews
Comfortable managing multiple workstreams
Comfortable supporting client relationships
Ability to collaborate with cross-practice teams across multiple jurisdictions
Proactive and comfortable working independently
Strong academic credentials
Excellent analytical, organizational, communication, and writing skills
Demonstrated ability and willingness to collaborate across teams and cultures
Willingness to enhance skills using AI tools
Admitted and a member in good standing of the District of Columbia Bar or eligible to waive in
Ideally broader experience in export controls, sanctions, and national security-related areas· nice to have
Major law firm experience is strongly preferred· nice to have
