The role

Harbottle & Lewis is seeking a Data Protection Associate with 2-4 years of PQE to join their Litigation practice in London. This role will focus on contentious data protection and cyber matters, advising clients on a range of information disputes and crisis situations.

What you'll do

  • Support Partners and Senior Associates with advising clients dealing with urgent, complex, high-profile and often sensitive crisis matters across a range of information disputes, including cyber and data matters
  • Diversify practice and expertise into new areas in the information law space, such as defamation, malicious falsehood, misuse of private information, harassment and blackmail law
  • Advise clients on compliance on calls and in writing regarding cyber incidents
  • Coordinate pragmatic data protection advice alongside the data advisory team
  • Provide pragmatic advice on risk management to a diverse client base
  • Engage in direct client contact
  • Make connections and present to clients or peers

What we're looking for

2-4 years PQE
Strong focus on cyber and contentious data protection matters
Experience advising on the life cycle of cyber incidents, including high-pressured breach response and crisis management
Experience providing legal and regulatory advice on compliance in relation to cyber incidents
Experience advising on notification strategy and regulatory engagement, including corresponding with the ICO and advising on associated enforcement
Knowledge of data protection legislation, including the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, ICO guidance and relevant EU law
Experience advising on, defending and making subject access requests and other regulatory compliance matters
Experience handling long tail contentious matters post breach for claimants and defendants, including information and data litigation, dispute resolution and legal proceedings
Experience advising clients on breach preparation, breach simulations, communications support following a breach and working with trusted technical cyber partners
Commercially minded with the ability to provide pragmatic advice on risk management
Genuine interest in the intersection of media and information law and a desire to develop and widen practice in new areas
Strong communication and organisational skills
Good attention to detail
Keen on business development, making connections and presenting to client or peers
