The role
Jones Day is seeking an IP Patent Prosecution Associate with 1+ years of experience to join their IP practice group in Atlanta, Boston, or New York. The role focuses on patent prosecution and portfolio management for life sciences clients, requiring advanced scientific expertise in organic chemistry.
What you'll do
- Draft and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications in organic chemistry and related disciplines
- Conduct freedom-to-operate, validity, and patentability analyses
- Assist in IP due diligence, portfolio management, and strategic counseling for emerging and established pharmaceutical company clients
- Collaborate with attorneys to provide scientific expertise in support of litigation, licensing, and other IP-related matters
- Maintain current knowledge of U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and international patent practices, procedures, and developments relevant to life sciences technologies
What we're looking for
Ph.D. in organic chemistry, synthetic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, or a related field
Registered to practice before the USPTO with a valid registration number and in good standing
Admitted to local state bar and in good standing
Strong background in organic or medicinal chemistry, with demonstrated expertise in synthetic methodologies, drug design, or small molecule development
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex scientific concepts into clear legal documents
Minimum of one (1) year of prior law firm or in-house patent prosecution experience in the chemistry/pharma space
Team-oriented, detail-focused, and committed to providing high-quality client service
Excellent written and oral communication skills and superior academic background
Desire for significant responsibility and client interaction
M.S. and several years of industry research experience may be considered as an alternative to a Ph.D.· nice to have
